Small Galley Kitchen Design
Small Galley Kitchen DesignA small galley kitchen design is a good option for homeowners who do not have much space to afford in their homes. Galley kitchens are those that have two adjacent counter rows, which are choc-a-bloc with cabinets. These counters contain all the kitchen accessories like the cooking stoves, dishwashers and even washing machines within the cabinets. The main intention is space saving, and with all the accessories within enclosed cabinets, the space looks tidy and hence bigger in space. The main thing about the small galley kitchen designs lies in how the plans are laid out. The prime intention is to make as much of the available space as possible and for that, proper layout is extremely important. A galley kitchen does not have dining space within it, so that much space is already cut out. However, the other appliances needed in a kitchen are definitely present and need to be placed in a manner that looks good as well as conserves area. Ships use these galley kitchen designs. These vessels cannot large space for a kitchen but at the same time they may need more space because of the large number of people they need to serve. Also, these kitchens do not need the dining area to be placed within the kitchen. These galley kitchens are usually designed with running length counters so that there could be easy movement of the cooks within the kitchen without actually obstructing each other. This is exactly what is done in a galley style kitchen meant for the home also. The kitchen usually has a space in the middle where movement of people is facilitated. This is a running length between the counters along the two adjacent kitchen walls. There is usually undisturbed flow of traffic along this length, but in some cases, a piece of furniture might be placed in the middle of this empty space of movement so that there can be better channelized movement when two or more people are using the same kitchen. The furniture could be something as simple as an island table which can also be used for storing cups and saucers, crockery, cutlery, etc, or may be simply a showpiece. However, having a showpiece in a galley kitchen is an unlikely event because people will want to save as much space as possible in such a kitchen. Tile is usually used for the walls of the galley kitchens because these are extremely durable and easily washable. Hence they can be used to keep the kitchen clean as a narrow kitchen will mean more fumes trying to spoil the walls. Also, the flooring is made of some very durable material such as floor tiles because of the large number of footfalls that this area will certainly get. Using tough materials right from the start, even for the cabinets, ensures that repeated refacing will not be required. The small galley kitchen design is not as bad as you might think. Actually, saving space is something everyone is indulging in today and when you can actually have a good looking kitchen along with the concept of space conservation, why shouldn't you go for it? Galley kitchens are the new home decor fashion, and this is a practical fashion too. |
